With the film Toilet Ek Prem Katha starring Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar garnering Rs 133.60 cr as its total at the box office at the end of week 4, it has become the highest-grossing film ever in Akshay Kumar's career. The film's crossed the collections of Rowdy Rathore that stood at Rs. 133.25 cr. Toilet Ek Prem Katha marks Akshay’s second movie this year after Jolly LLB and both movies have ushered themselves onto the list of highest openers of 2017. Akshay will be next seen in movies like PadMan, Gold and 2.0.
Toilet Ek Prem Katha directed by Shree Narayan Singh was released on August 11. The film had an advantage of Independence day holiday which helped it in collecting Rs 96.05 cr in its first week, followed by Rs 28.35 cr in week 2. However, the collection came down to Rs 7.20 cr and Rs 2 cr in week 3 and 4, respectively. Hence, the total four-week collection of the film stood at Rs 133.60 cr.
The movie starring Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Anupam Kher has dealt with an unorthodox theme of open defecation which is a persistent problem in India. The 49-year-old actor played the role of a husband trying to win his wife back by building a toilet for her in the house. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan forms the basic premise of “Toilet Ek Prem Katha” but Akshay says he did not do the film solely on the merit of the script. Movies of Bollywood A-listers have lately been faring miserably at the BO and Akshay Kumar starrer’s phenomenal performance at the box office was a welcome sight for the industry.
